No charges in death of man in RCMP custody

There will be no charges in the death of a man in RCMP custody in northern Alberta a year ago.

EDMONTON — There will be no charges in the death of a man in RCMP custody in northern Alberta a year ago.

The head of the province’s serious incident response team says there’s no evidence that any officer committed a criminal offence.

Clif Purvis says the man died as the result of a head injury he received before he was taken to hospital.

The man was arrested for public drunkenness Sept. 12, 2010, and taken to an RCMP holding cell in High Level where he became unresponsive.

He died in an Edmonton hospital about two weeks later.

Purvis says the investigation was unable to determine when or how the fatal injury was sustained.
