No problem detected before fatal tummy tuck

The doctor who performed a tummy tuck that later turned fatal says there was nothing wrong with the patient when he sent her home.

CALGARY — The doctor who performed a tummy tuck that later turned fatal says there was nothing wrong with the patient when he sent her home.

Dr. Mark Haugrud was testifying in Calgary at the inquiry into the death of 33-year-old Ashish Toews.

Toews died shortly after undergoing a tummy tuck at a private clinic in 2008.

The inquiry heard Toews had trouble breathing after the operation and had low oxygen levels, but was sent home to the care of her husband because the clinic was not licensed to keep patients overnight.

Haugard says if there were post-op breathing problems that would be the responsibility of the anaesthesiologist.

The inquiry resumes May 16th, with the anaesthesiologist set to take the stand.
