Notre Dame Cougars finish provincials with 1-2 record

The Notre Dame Cougars finished the provincial 4A high school basketball championships with a 1-2 record after beating Grande Prairie 84-79 Saturday.

CARDSTON — The Notre Dame Cougars finished the provincial 4A high school basketball championships with a 1-2 record after beating Grande Prairie 84-79 Saturday.

Dario Viveros had 20 points for the Cougars with Jonkar Jonakor hitting 16, Jordan Handel 14 and Diego Manjiver 10.

Cardston captured the boys’ title with a 68-62 win over Calgary’s Bishop O’Byrne while Western Canada downed Centennial 74-63 in an all-Calgary girls’ final.

l The Camrose Trojans used their home court to their advantage as they captured the 3A boys’ championship with a 60-57 win over Cochrane.

St. Albert won the girls’ title with a 68-64 win over Monsignor McCoy of Medicine Hat.

Camrose won the girls’ consolation title with a 60-46 win over Winston Churchill of Lethbridge. They beat Wetaskiwin 56-53 in the semifinals.

• The Central Alberta Christian High School Knights of Lacombe took seventh in the 2A boys’ playoffs in Cold Lake with a 64-62 win over Immanuel Christian of Lethbridge.

Paul DenOudsten had 20 points for the Knights with Aaron DenOudsten and Jason Dewit had 14 each and Trent Nicolay 10.

West Island Collegiate of Calgary downed Drumheller 70-67 in the final while Prairie Christian of Three Hills beat Webber Academy of Calgary 93-66 in the consolation final.

On the girls’ side, Immanuel Christian downed F.P. Walshe of Fort Macleod 71-55 in the final. Rimbey took ninth with a 60-54 win over Ashmont as Lacey Soderberg and Jill Tennant had 13 points each and Bernadette Weiss and Sylvia VonGunten 10 apiece.

• Ryley won the 2A girls’ championship with a 61-59 win over host Livingstone while Acme beat Coaldale 60-47 in the boys’ final in Hobbema.

Glendon downed Erminskin of Hobbema 63-20 in the ninth-10th place game.
