O'Chiese man charged with armed robbery and uttering threats

A man from O’Chiese Nations Reserve has been charged with robbery with a weapon and uttering threats following a robbery at a reserve store on Wednesday morning.

A man from O’Chiese Nations Reserve has been charged with robbery with a weapon and uttering threats following a robbery at a reserve store on Wednesday morning.

On July 6th at 11:18 am, a lone native male entered the O’Chiese store armed with a knife, producing a note detailing instructions of a robbery. The suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Several local residents from the Sunchild & O’Chiese reserves had a foot pursuit and lost the male suspect in the heavily wooded areas. The Rocky Mountain House RCMP responded with four officers and the support of the Police Dog Section from Red Deer. The O’Chiese reserve is located approximately 45 kms North West of Rocky Mountain House, Ab.

Extensive searches were done and further sightings were made of the suspect who continued to evade the police in the wooded areas.

At 4:30 pm, two members of the Rocky Mountain House RCMP detachment apprehended the suspect without incident. The suspect had in his possession a undisclosed amount of cash.

Kelly Wallace Desjarlais, 24, has been charged with one count each of robbery with offensive weapon, uttering threats and failing to comply with an undertaking. Desjarlias, a resident of the O’Chiese First Nations Reserve, will appear in Red Deer court Monday July 11.
