Adding to an already busy Canada Day long weekend, Red Deer RCMP helped capture a moose running loose in Grandview on Monday.

At about 1:30 p.m., police received numerous calls from residents reporting a moose running through the Grandview School playground where children were playing.

Police officers attended and tracked the moose for over an hour.

Eventually the moose was tranquilized by Fish and Wildlife officers in the area of 33rd Street and 42nd Avenue. After officers loaded the two-year-old bull moose on to the truck, the animal was taken to a safe location outside the city and released.

Red Deer City RCMP would like to remind citizens that a moose is a wild animal capable of seriously harming a person. Anyone that encounters moose you should keep a safe distance.
