Peter Schill and Tyler Rose, of Alberta Craft Malting, took first prize in the 2015 TEC VenturePrize Student Business Plan Competition. The award carries a $20,000 cash prize. The award encourages innovation among start-up businesses in Alberta by providing cash prizes along with mentoring from business leaders.

Schill and Rose are integrating Alberta-grown barley to develop custom base malts and specialty malts for the brewing industry. They plan to use state-of-the-art technology to develop custom base and specialty malts that aren’t being made in Alberta.

It is the second award this year for Schill and Rose. Earlier, Alberta Craft Malting won first place in the RED Challenge, an entrepreneurial contest that been rewarding innovation in Central Alberta since 2009. Alberta Craft Malting earned $20,000 in that competition to develop their innovative business ideas.
