CALGARY — Court has heard how two lovers who kept their phone connection open as they fell asleep quickly helped solve a home invasion and robbery.
Johnny Nguyen’s girlfriend, Anna Nguyen, was able to alert police after she heard bandits threatening her boyfriend in January 2007.
“Anna Nguyen heard the yelling and commotion of the home invasion robbery while it was occurring as a result of the open line between (hers) and Johnny Nguyen’s cellphones,” Crown prosecutor Gord Haight said.
He explained how she heard one attacker telling her boyfriend to get down or he would be killed.
“Anna Nguyen then phoned 911 to report the home invasion.”
Officers arrived at the boyfriend’s Calgary home just as three thieves were leaving the residence.
An agreed statement of facts said the trio was armed with a loaded .357 Magnum and machetes. They bound Johnny Nguyen and his mother with duct tape as they searched the house for drugs and money.
Nguyen and his mother were both injured.
Godfrey Samuel Mills, 21, pleaded guilty Tuesday to break and enter to commit armed robbery and was sentenced to six years in prison.
A second man was sentenced earlier to nine years, while a youth was ordered into custody for nine months.
