Opposition calls for broader inquiry a political ‘stunt’: Stelmach

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says the province’s health-care system is not a political football.

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says the province’s health-care system is not a political football.

Stelmach issued a statement late Sunday reacting to a news conference Friday by Alberta’s four opposition party leaders and Independent health critic Raj (RAZH) Sherman.

The five demanded a full inquiry into the hospital system, but Stelmach says Friday’s event was all about politics.

He says if anyone has evidence of irregularity in the accounting of any public body in Alberta, they have a duty to bring it forward rather than raising phoney questions as a stunt for the cameras.

Stelmach announced last week that his government will hold an independent review of health-care waiting lists to resolve allegations of dangerously substandard care and needless deaths.
