Optimist Rebels beaten by Bisons

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels got off to slow start and dropped a 6-2 decision to the UFA Bisons in the boys’ division of the Mac’s midget AAA hockey tournament Tuesday.

CALGARY — The Red Deer Optimist Rebels got off to slow start and dropped a 6-2 decision to the UFA Bisons in the boys’ division of the Mac’s midget AAA hockey tournament Tuesday.

The Bisons led 4-0 and 6-0 by periods before Connor Hartley and Brady Bakke scored for the Rebels in the third period.

The loss left Red Deer with a 0-1-1 record.

Tanner Jaillet started in goal for the Rebels, making four saves in the first period before giving way to Brendon Mandrusiak, who made 15 saves. Red Deer had 29 shots on goal.

Rebels face the Winnipeg Wild today at 11:45 a.m. at Max Bell and the Valley West Hawks Thursday at 11:45 a.m. at the Flames Arena.

Meanwhile the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs ran their pool-leading record to 2-0 with a 4-1 win over the Thompson-Okanagan Rockets.

Jade Petrie, Cassidy Anderson, who notched the game-winning goal at 5:28 of the second period and was named Red Deer’s player of the game, Ashley Graf and Emily Lougheed added single markers.

Megan Kirkland finished with 15 saves for the Chiefs, who had 27 shots on goal.

Red Deer took four of 15 minor penalties.

The Chiefs return to action today at 1 p.m. against the Westman Wildcats of Manitoba and face the Calgary Bruins Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Both games are at the Max Bell Arena.
