Optimist Rebels down Blazers

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels put together a solid two-way effort to down the Saskatoon Blazers 5-0 in the 34th annual Mac’s midget AAA Christrmashockey tournament Tuesday.The win gave the Rebels a 1-0-1 record.

CALGARY — The Red Deer Optimist Rebels put together a solid two-way effort to down the Saskatoon Blazers 5-0 in the 34th annual Mac’s midget AAA Christrmashockey tournament Tuesday.

The win gave the Rebels a 1-0-1 record.

Dylan Thudium, Quinn Brown, Brendan Dennis, Rory Davidson and Nick Glackin scored once each for the Rebels while Ty Mappin was their player of the game.

Goaltender Matt Zentner finished with 16 saves for the shutout while his mates had 37 shots on goal.

On Monday, defenceman Joel Topping scored at 16:51 of the final period to give the Rebels a 3-3 tie with Russia Severstal/Locomotiv.

Thudium and Davidson had the other Red Deer goals. Dasan Sydora made 17 saves in goal while his mates had 38 shots.

Meanwhile on the girls’ side, the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs downed the Lloydminster Steelers 4-1 to run their record to 2-0-0.

Both Red Deer teams have today off.

The Rebels face the Calgary Flames Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and the Greater Vancouver Canadians Friday at 2:30 p.m.

The Chiefs take on the Saskatoon Stars Thursday at 1 p.m. and the Calgary Bruins Friday at 8 a.m.

l Two members of the Rebels, along with their coaching staff, were named to the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s South Division first all-star team to compete in the 22nd annual all-star game, Feb. 5 in Edmonton.

Sydora and Topping made the team and will be joined by head coach Doug Quinn, assistants Al Parada, Dion Zukiwsky and Rob Hamill, trainer Lee Sherback and manager Trica Bakke.
