Optimist Rebels pick up AMHL awards

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels were the top team in the Alberta Midget Hockey League during the 2009-10 season, and also featured two individual award winners.

The Red Deer Optimist Rebels were the top team in the Alberta Midget Hockey League during the 2009-10 season, and also featured two individual award winners.

In a vote of coaches and managers, Sam Jardine has been selected as the AMHL defenceman of the year (Brian Benning Trophy) and Jarrett Zentner has been named the top defensive forward (Brian Sutter Trophy).

Jardine scored nine goals and recorded 34 points in 34 regular-season games, while Zentner had eight goals and 26 points.

In addition, Optimist Rebels goaltender Travis Weber has been awarded a $1,000 post secondary education scholarship through the AMHL scholarship program.

Top forward (Trevor Linden Trophy) — Troy Bourke, St. Albert Raiders.

Most sportsmanlike player (Bob Johnson Memorial) — Jetlan Houcher, Lloydminster Bobcats.

Coach of the year (Glen Sather Trophy) — James Poole, Calgary Buffaloes.

Top scorer (Harry Allen Memorial) — Stephane Legault, Edmonton Southside Athletics.

Richard Warwick Memorial — Austin Frank, Calgary Buffaloes.

Least goals allowed (Cam Ward Trophy) — St. Albert Raiders.

Least penalized team (Commissioners’ Award) — Grande Prairie Storm.

Most valuable playoff performer — Jordan Cooke, Leduc Oil Kings.
