Oversized load haulers may face new Red Deer bylaw

Oversize loads like manufactured homes may be allowed to be moved through Red Deer under a new bylaw.

Oversize loads like manufactured homes may be allowed to be moved through Red Deer under a new bylaw.

Red Deer city council approved on Monday an amendment to the traffic bylaw. It will allow the city manager to permit loads larger than are currently permitted.

The decision comes after a local manufactured home business called city administration for a permit to move a modular home. The permit was not granted because it exceeded the maximum dimensions.

“The manufacturer subsequently indicated that the standard is not reasonable for the homes that are now being constructed,” said a staff report.

The current traffic bylaw allows a maximum width of 7.6 metres. Many modular homes are now being built at 8.53 metres.

Manufacturers may have been breaching the bylaw by moving loads without municipal permits, according to the report.

Administration is doing a review of the high and wide corridor routes. A report will be prepared and will come back to council.
