Motorists who exceed their parking maximums at City of Red Deer parking lots and meters will get a shock this week.

Parking fines have risen by more than 70 per cent effective Jan. 1.

The old ticket was $30 but increased to $55 this week.

If tickets are paid before the due date, it will cost $20 compared to $10 for prepaid tickets in 2011.

All parking related penalties are increasing by $25 including parking in fire lanes.

City council approved the increase in December.

Joyce Boon, city inspections and licensing manager, said the increase means parking penalties are comparable to other municipalities.

“This increase was needed to ensure that our parking operations meet budget expectations and remain self-supporting,” Boon said in a city news release.
