Red Deer County has turned down a funding request for a new Innisfail playground.

The nearly $350,000 project would see a new playground built between École John Wilson Elementary and St. Marguerite Catholic Schools, and will also be used by Innisfail Middle School.

County councillors supported the idea of having a better playground for school children, but noted the county had already provided $300,000 towards recent renovation and construction projects at the Innisfail schools.

It was also pointed out that matching provincial lottery funds are available for projects of this kind.

Council voted to deny funding by a 5-2 vote, with Councillors Philip Massier and Christine Moore the dissenting votes. Massier had suggested the county contribute $10,000 but it did not get to a vote.
