Police apologize to man for raid

CALGARY — Police have issued a written apology to a man whose home was wrongly targeted in a raid.

CALGARY — Police have issued a written apology to a man whose home was wrongly targeted in a raid.

Zelalem Meshesha says he looked out his window one night last month and saw several guns staring back at him. When Meshesha stepped outside, he was thrown to the ground and handcuffed.

His wife, who was inside the home with their young daughter, was also handcuffed.

Police have said they were responding to a 911 call that a man inside a home was armed, though it later turned out to be a prank call.

Compounding the problem was that the 911 call centre had the right cellphone number, but an outside database was used to find the address, which turned out to be wrong.

Since then, Meshesha has been demanding a written apology from the department and now has one.

“It was very sincere and I had a very good conversation with the deputy chief and that’s what I was looking for,” Meshesha said.

“I don’t have any intention to take this issue beyond this level.”
