Police investigate Christmas Eve death of inmate

EDMONTON — Homicide detectives in Edmonton are investigating a death at the city’s remand centre on Christmas Eve.

EDMONTON — Homicide detectives in Edmonton are investigating a death at the city’s remand centre on Christmas Eve.

Investigators say witnesses report that a fight occurred between two inmates in a cell on Tuesday night.

Police say paramedics were called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity hasn’t been released.

Earlier this year, prison guards across Alberta walked off the job illegally in a labour dispute that began over safety concerns at the new Edmonton Remand Centre.

The government forced them back to work with a court order, which included heavy fines for the union and the province also fired some of the employees.

There has not been a homicide at the facility since it opened in April, according to an Alberta Justice and Solicitor General spokesman.
