Police investigating cell death

The death of a 48-year-old man in police custody on a reserve in southern Alberta is being investigated.

STANDOFF — The death of a 48-year-old man in police custody on a reserve in southern Alberta is being investigated.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says it has been called in to review what happened in a Blood Tribe Police Service cell.

ASIRT spokesman Clif Purvis says the man was believed to be drunk and to have breached a court order when he was arrested on Tuesday.

Purvis says the man was checked by officers in the early hours of June 1 and found to be unresponsive.

The man has not year been positively identified.
