Police say death of 26-day-old boy homicide

CALGARY — A Calgary infant’s death has now been declared a homicide.

CALGARY — A Calgary infant’s death has now been declared a homicide.

Daniel Herchak was just 26 days old when he died after being admitted to Alberta Children’s Hospital.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head that was not caused by an accident.

Police say an ambulance rushed the baby to hospital on Monday morning. Because of the nature of his injuries, hospital staff contacted the child abuse unit, which then contacted the homicide unit.

As of Thursday, no one had been arrested and no charges had been laid.

Police say Daniel’s mother is 18 years old and the baby was living with family members.

“We’ve contacted and interviewed everyone who had access to the child,” said Insp. Doug Andrus. “We’re in the early stages of the investigation and are looking at all the possibilities.”

Police say Daniel’s father is not a suspect as he was estranged from the baby’s mother and was not involved in raising the child.
