Police still looking for suspects in violent downtown attacks

Red Deer RCMP are looking for two male suspects who ambushed three men and left them with broken noses and facial injuries in three unprovoked attacks in downtown Red Deer early Wednesday morning.

Red Deer RCMP are looking for two male suspects who ambushed three men and left them with broken noses and facial injuries in three unprovoked attacks in downtown Red Deer early Wednesday morning.

The three separate incidents occurred sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. in downtown Red Deer. One male victim was attacked and robbed near the Central Alberta Theatre building on 49th Street, where he used his cellphone to call police.

“That’s our anchor point,” said DeHeer. “I believe that one was about 1:30 a.m. when that call came in. We believe they occurred sometime between midnight and 2 a.m.”

The other two victims were at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre when they reported the assaults and robberies, making it difficult for the RCMP to pinpoint the exact locations, said DeHeer.

“They were all in the downtown core,” said DeHeer. “These guys did take a licking — a lot of bruises, broken noses and facial injuries. . . . We’re talking fairly violent assaults. They were unprovoked where they jumped out at the guys. The guys were sorta laying in wait. The guys waited and jumped out and violently assaulted the victims and robbed them.”

RCMP believe the same two men are responsible for the three attacks. None of the victims knew their attackers.

RCMP will review the video surveillance tapes from the Mohawk gas station on 49th Street because one of the victims may have been jumped near the station.

Both suspects are described as possibly aboriginal. One male had acne scarring or pock marks on his face.

DeHeer said residents should be cautious when walking alone at night.

“People have to consider there is some risk to walking alone at night,” she said. “For anybody there is a little more potential for danger when you are doing that.”
