Flags are at half mast in Ponoka today to mark the funeral for a Ponoka town councillor who lost her battle with cancer.

Beva Hamilton, 57, died Oct. 7.

Hamilton was a first-term town councillor, elected in October 2010.

Mayor Larry Henkelman said Hamilton will be sadly missed by her fellow councillors and the community.

“She always did her research and was always well prepared before a meeting.”

A registered nurse, Hamilton was concerned with improving the delivery of services at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre and with senior citizens’ housing issues. A nurse for more than 35 years, she worked in the recovery unit at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.

Beva Hamilton (neé Farnham) married grocer Jim Hamilton two years ago and is survived by her daughter, Martha Darwin; son, Brian Beagle; step-children; a sister and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Ponoka with interment in the Forest Home Cemetery.
