Premier orders up solutions for notorious oilsands highway

Alberta Premier Alison Redford has given one of her politician six weeks to come up with solutions to fast-track the twinning of the notorious highway to the oilsands.

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Alison Redford has given one of her politician six weeks to come up with solutions to fast-track the twinning of the notorious highway to the oilsands.

Redford says Mike Allen will also make recommendations to Transportation Minister Ric McIver before the end of June 29 on interim ways to improve safety on Highway 63.

Allen is the area MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo.

Highway 63, a 240-kilometre stretch of undivided pavement with a single lane in each direction, has become increasingly dangerous due to overloaded traffic to and from the booming oilsands.

The result has been scores of crashes and 46 deaths in the last five years.

Last month, two children and a pregnant woman were among seven people killed in a head-on crash between two pickup trucks.
