Premier says not being disrespectful towards AMA

EDMONTON — Alberta’s premier says he’s not dismissing or showing disrespect to the Alberta Medical Association over allegations of doctor intimidation.

EDMONTON — Alberta’s premier says he’s not dismissing or showing disrespect to the Alberta Medical Association over allegations of doctor intimidation.

Ed Stelmach says physicians’ concerns will be addressed by the Health Quality Council.

Stelmach’s government is facing escalating pressure to call an independent inquiry into reports by some doctors that they have been punished by their bosses for speaking out on problems in the health care system.

The AMA, the body that speaks for almost all Alberta physicians, added its voice last Friday, saying a full inquiry with subpoena powers is the only way to make sure the truth comes out.

However, the association also says it will co-operate with the Health Quality Council probe if that’s the only venue of investigation.

Stelmach says given the agreement by doctors to work with the council, he is satisfied solutions will be found to the problems.
