Premier wants to hear Mayor Mandel’s complaints about cap on election donations

EDMONTON — Premier Ed Stelmach wants to hear Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel’s concerns about new limits on municipal election donations.

EDMONTON — Premier Ed Stelmach wants to hear Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel’s concerns about new limits on municipal election donations.

The mayor is quoted as saying $5,000 cap on donations that recently came into effect is “stupid” and “degrading.”

Previously, there had been no limit on such donations and Mandel reported a dozen donations of more than $5,000 in the 2007 election.

Stelmach appeared to be taken off guard by the mayor’s pointed attack on the new law, which was proclaimed earlier this month.

The premier says the private member’s bill was widely supported in the legislature, so he’s not promising any amendments.

Stelmach came under fire a few years ago when he refused to disclose the names of some of the largest contributors to his Tory leadership campaign.
