Five prescribed burns are being planned in the Nordegg and Caroline areas this year.

The burns are set for three areas north and west of Nordegg, one 80 km south of the mountain town, and one 50 km west of Caroline.

Along with improving ungulate habitat, the burns are designed to establish a break in vegetation to limit the potential spread of unplanned forest fires.

In a release, Barry Shellian with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development says that burns will only be conducted when weather and on-the-ground conditions permit.

The release says spring is the ideal season for the burns, but that they could take place anytime between spring and late fall.
