Programs aims to reduce alcohol problems at bars

A program being launched in Calgary will provide information about the safest drinking spots in the city.

CALGARY — A program being launched in Calgary will provide information about the safest drinking spots in the city.

Best Bar None is voluntary and aims to reduce alcohol-related problems by offering accreditation to bars and lounges willing to meet strict safety standards.

They include written policies for serving alcohol, rules for dealing with the discovery of illegal drugs and monitoring clientele.

The same program began in Edmonton two years ago and now has 42 accredited establishments.

Accredited bars receive a plaque and door signage to inform patrons of the spot’s commitment to public safety and customer service.

There are 300 pubs, clubs, bars and lounges eligible to apply in Calgary.
