SLAVE LAKE — The Alberta government is giving the fire-ravaged Slave Lake region an additional $189 million to help with rebuilding and recovery costs.

The province had already announced $100 million in funding shortly after a wildfire wiped out one-third of the community in May.

About 2,000 people lost their homes.

The new money is being directed to three projects that include interim housing for displaced residents.

Some of the money is to cover the cost of evacuation centres that were set up in surrounding towns and reserves during the fire.

Slave Lake Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee (kahr-REEN’-ah puh-LAY’ KINN’-ee) says the community is grateful and couldn’t rebuild without government support.
