Province promises more disaster recovery cash in Central Alberta

The province has announced more disaster recovery help for areas hit by severe flooding last summer.

Heavy rainfalls from July 26 to 27 caused flooding in a number of Central Alberta communities, including Eckville and Lacombe and surrounding counties.

In the latest program, $1.5 million will be available to help compensate for losses not covered by insurance.

Lacombe County and the City of Lacombe will host a joint registration centre on Feb. 7 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre at 5214 50th Ave. from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Residents making an application for assistance should bring a piece of photo identification, a letter from an insurance company indicating damage that is not covered, and a detailed list of all property damaged or destroyed. Photos or receipts are not needed for registration and should be provided later to an evaluator.

Residents not able to attend the registration session can register at Lacombe City Hall at 5432 56th Ave. during regular business hours until Feb. 8.

This is the second disaster recovery program announced by the government because of last July’s deluges.

Alberta Municipal Affairs announced last September that it would commit up to $3.5 million for the City of Lacombe, Lacombe County, Ponoka County and Town of Eckville under the Disaster Recovery program.

The cash covers uninsurable losses from July 11 and 12 rains, which caused severe flooding. It is available to homeowners, small businesses, agricultural producers and municipalities.

The government also committed up to $300,000 to Red Deer County so it can recover cleanup costs from heavy winds during a July 7 evening storm. In that incident, a likely tornado ripped through an area southwest of Innisfail.
