Alberta Liberals have chosen a psychiatrist as their candidate in an upcoming Calgary byelection.

Avalon Roberts will run for the party in the Calgary-Glenmore seat vacated by deputy premier Ron Stevens.

Stevens resigned last month and a few days later was named a justice on the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench.

Roberts has served as the president of the Alberta Psychiatric Association and as provincial chairwoman for the Friends of Medicare.

Calgary Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart is running for the Progressive Conservatives and Eric Carpendale will represent the NDP.

No date has been set for the byelection.
