Quiet walk with dogs turns into painful nightmare

A woman is recovering from bites and bruises to her face and hands after she and her two small dogs were attacked by two large canines in a southern Alberta city.

LETHBRIDGE — A woman is recovering from bites and bruises to her face and hands after she and her two small dogs were attacked by two large canines in a southern Alberta city.

One of the small dogs was killed by the larger animals when the attack happened while the 59-year-old woman was out walking Wednesday morning in Lethbridge.

Police say the owner tried to protect her pets when the two large dogs ran toward them.

Area residents rushed to her aid and helped get one of her pooches to safety in a nearby yard, but the second dog was critically injured and died at a veterinary clinic where the woman had taken it for treatment.

The owner later went to hospital for treatment of her own injuries.

The two large dogs were caught and placed in quarantine and officials have identified their owner, but there is no word on charges.
