RDC curlers defeat Augustana

CAMROSE — The RDC men’s team came through when it counted to win gold at the ACAC curling championships Sunday.

The team of Shane Parcels, Dawson Abraham, Stephen Hood and Dylan Hoar beat the University of Alberta Augustana of Camrose 6-3 in the final to give RDC the men’s title for the second year in a row.

In preliminary play Parcels downed Grant MacEwan 5-4, Augustana 7-3 and NAIT 7-4 to finish first.

They then lost the 1-2 Page playoff game 6-4 to Augustana, before beating MacEwan 4-2 in the semifinal.

In the final Parcels stole singles in the seventh and eighth to pull out the victory and advance to the nationals, March 20-24 in Peterborough, Ont.

Meanwhile, the RDC women’s team of Kaitlyn Sherrer, Kayla Parkins, Jessica Andruchow and Lindsay Janko, finished fourth.

They opened with a 9-1 win over Lakeland College before losing 5-4 to NAIT and 9-4 to Grande Prairie. They lost 7-3 to Lakeland in the 3-4 Page playoff game before dropping an 8-6 decision to Lakeland in the bronze medal contest.
