For the first time in over a decade Red Deer College is sending a team to the Canadian Colleges badminton championships as Alberta champions.
Mary Smith and Japan native Mizuki Awai captured the women’s doubles title at the ACAC finals during the weekend at Mount Royal University.
They defeated top-seeded NAIT 17-21, 21-12, 21-16 in the final and will compete at the nationals, March 1-3 at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. The last time RDC captured a provincial title was in the 1999-2000 season.
Awai led the RDC team to third place in the standings. They lost 5-3 to Concordia in the semifinal then downed Mount Royal 5-4 in the bronze-medal match. Awai won all four of her matches in the team competition and was 7-0 overall.
