RDC preparing for biggest convocation

Red Deer College’s biggest convocation ceremony in its 48-year history will be held on Friday at the Sheraton Hotel.

Red Deer College’s biggest convocation ceremony in its 48-year history will be held on Friday at the Sheraton Hotel.

A total of 503 out of 1,800 graduates will attend convocation to celebrate their academic achievements.

Last year, 420 attended out of close to 2,000 graduates.

Joyce Fox, director of marketing, communications and student recruitment at RDC, said fewer graduates attend convocation because many university transfer students wait to attend the graduation ceremony of their final program. Trades students, many of whom are working, also tend to wait until they receive their trade ticket.

RDC will hold two ceremonies, at 9:30 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m.

Todd Towers, president and founder of Farmboy Fine Arts in Vancouver, and alumnus of the Visual Art program at RDC, is the keynote speaker.

Several awards will be presented:

l The G.H. Dawe Memorial Award to recognize a student who is a strong college supporter and active member of Central Alberta’s community.

l The RDC Foundation Outstanding Student award for outstanding leadership and commitment to RDC through participation and contribution.

l The Governor General’s Academic Medal (Collegiate Bronze Level) for the highest academic standing after completing the final year of a diploma-level, post-secondary program.

l The first Faculty of Arts Silver Medallion in Collaborative Programs for the highest academic achievement in the degree-granting University of Calgary collaborative program based at RDC.

l Special honours recognition to three students.
