The annual drive for school supplies is shaping up to be one for the record books.

Tools for School program co-ordinator Laura Wolfe estimated that 1,200 local students will receive backpacks filled with school supplies through this year’s program.

The Tools for School program handed out 1,037 to students from kindergarten to Grade 12. In previous years, only 700 or 800 families accessed the program.

“Every year it’s been growing by 100 or 150,” said Wolfe.

Wolfe credited the increase to more immigrants families moving to Central Alberta, the recession and layoffs in some industries.

Four new dropoff sites have been added this year, bringing the total to 10 locations in Red Deer and Sylvan Lake.

For several years, the Central Alberta Women’s Outreach Tools for School program, in partnership with the United Way of Central Alberta, has collected and distributed school supplies to families who need a little help getting their children ready for the new school year.

Parents fill out application forms through the Central Alberta Outreach Society.

Dropoff bins are in store locations throughout Central Alberta during July and August.

While all school supplies are needed, Wolfe said items that are in particular need are geometry sets, flash drives and scientific calculators.

Donations are accepted until Sept. 2. However, those who would like to donate after this time should drop off supplies at the Central Alberta Women’s Outreach Society at 4808 51st Ave.
