A 23-year-old Red Deer man rounded up during a major police and weapons bust in January 2011 was sentenced to six months in prison on Wednesday.

Robert Kovich, 23, was among four men arrested after police raided two homes in Red Deer and one in Sylvan Lake. Cocaine and other drugs, more than $11,000 in cash and a number of weapons were seized.

Kovich earlier pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of cocaine, possession of the proceeds of crime and four counts of disqualified driving.

Red Deer provincial court Judge Bert Skinner sentenced him to three months for the proceeds charge and three months for disqualified driving, with other sentences on the other charges to be served concurrently.

Defence lawyer Walter Kubanek said Kovich, who works in the oilpatch as a motor hand, does not have a criminal past but fell in with the wrong crowd and was caught up in the police surveillance operation.

Kovich is also prohibited from driving for a year and must forfeit $7,050 considered the proceeds of crime.
