Novelist and Red Deer native R.L. Prendergast won a bronze medal for best Western Canadian fiction at the 2012 Independent Publishers Book Awards.

Prendergast, who now lives in Edmonton, won the award for his latest novel, Dinner With Lisa, which focuses on a young widower with four children and touches on issues of depression, poverty, unemployment and racism.

“In the midst of love and loyalty, trickery and despair, the ultimate message of the novel is one of hope and the courage to survive even the worst odds.”
