The Alberta election has just been called and the premier will make some of her first campaign stops in Central Alberta today.

Premier Alison Redford visited Lt. Governor Don Ethell on Monday morning to ask for the legislature to be dissolved, giving the official green light for parties to begin their respective campaigns.

Alberta voters will go to the polls on April 23.

Redford’s Monday schedule will bring her to Central Alberta, where she will make brief stops in Ponoka, Red Deer County and Innisfail.

Redford’s Tories and the Wildrose Party have been polling one-two respectively in pre-election surveys.

The Tories have 67 seats in the legislature compared with four for the Wildrose, eight for the Liberals, two for the NDP, one for the Alberta Party and one Independent.

The NDP, Tories and Wildrose all will field full slates of 87 candidates. The Liberals have 60, but leader Raj Sherman says they will have 87 by voting day. The Alberta Party has 26.
