PICTURE BUTTE — About 200 customers in southern Alberta are still in the dark after a spring snowstorm last week knocked down power lines and disrupted service to nearly 50,000 homes.

Crews spent much of Sunday repairing downed lines along rural roads.

Fortis employees have been putting in long days trying to restore power to both residential and oil and gas properties and are hoping they can have everyone back on the grid by Monday.

Jennifer MacGowan, a spokeswoman with Fortis, says the company hasn’t seen a mass outage like this in more than 25 years.

She says it’s been challenging given the number of poles and the number of wires that need to be repaired.

She says there are several kilometres of line where there are just one or two customers at the end, but it still takes hours to fix the lines and rebuild the poles.
