Repairs under way at refinery leak

Imperial Oil says repairs are underway at its refinery east of Edmonton after a leak of hydrocarbons.

SHERWOOD PARK — Imperial Oil says repairs are underway at its refinery east of Edmonton after a leak of hydrocarbons.

Company spokesman Jon Harding says nobody was hurt after the leak was detected over the noon hour at the refinery near Sherwood Park in Strathcona County.

Harding says area residents may have noticed a gasoline-type smell for a short while, but air quality was monitored in the immediate area and no problems were detected.

He did not know what kind of hydrocarbons leaked, or the amount.

Imperial Oil (TSX:IMO) says on its website that the refinery produces a wide range of petroleum products, including gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel, lubricating oils, petroleum waxes, heavy fuel oil and asphalts.

Harding says both Strathcona County and Alberta Environment were notified about the leak.

He says the leak had no impact on production at the refinery.

The refinery’s daily capacity is about 187,000 barrels of crude oil.
