Residents of evacuated condo get limited time to retrieve belongings

FORT MCMURRAY— Hundreds of people who were forced from a shifting and potentially dangerous condominium complex in northern Alberta will get just 15 minutes to retrieve belongings from their suites.

FORT MCMURRAY— Hundreds of people who were forced from a shifting and potentially dangerous condominium complex in northern Alberta will get just 15 minutes to retrieve belongings from their suites.

More than 300 condo owners and tenants from Penhorwood Apartments in Fort McMurray were forced out last Friday after engineers discovered buildings in the seven-structure development could shift and break gas lines.

The residents were told at a condo association meeting Tuesday night that limited access will only be allowed over the next four days.

The association says residents must also sign a waiver, stating they will not hold anyone accountable if anything happens to them while they are inside.

One frustrated tenant stormed out of the meeting after swearing at an association speaker who tried to explain why the evacuation was necessary.

John Conner, another of the evacuees, says he can’t understand why they are getting so little time to retrieve their belongings.
