Riggers collapse in semifinal

The Red Deer Riggers sprung a leak in the seventh inning Sunday and never did cap the well as they blew a four-run lead to fall 6-5 to the Fort Saskatchewan Athletics in the semifinal of the St. Albert Tigers’ senior AAA baseball tournament.

The loss dropped them to 2-2 on the weekend and out of the tournament.

Mac Girodat pitched six innings, scattering five hits and four walks and giving up three earned run while striking out four for the Riggers in the semifinal. Girodat allowed a single and two walks to start the top of the seventh. Matt Davis came in but couldn’t stop the bleeding giving up giving up a two-run scoring single and then a wild pitch that scored the winning run and was on the hook for the loss.

Mike Ronnie was 2-2 with two RBIs while Delton Kruk went 2-4 with two RBIs. Jason Chatwood 2-2, Curtis Bailey 2-4 and Matt Fay was 2-5.

The Riggers dropped their first game of the tournament 5-1 to the host Tigers with James Dykstra collecting the loss.

Red Deer rebounded to beat the Mayerthorpe Mets 13-0 with Davis collecting the shut out win.

Ronnie and Bailey both hit triples while Fay and Chatwood both had two RBIs.

The Riggers then beat the Prince George Greys 13-7 with Fay picking up the ‘W’.

Delton Kruck went 2-3 with three RBI and Shayne Court was 1-3 with two RBI.
