Organizers of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure in Red Deer are hoping for another record-breaking run on Oct. 2.

The 2010 run had 1,200 participants and raised a whopping $315,000, up from $189,000 in 2009.

“We’d like to beat last year’s numbers. We’d like to raise $330,000 and get 1,300 participants,” said run spokesperson Christina Verticchio.

Across Canada, 170,000 people walked or ran last year and raised the most ever — $33 million.

Verticchio said 2011 is a big year for Run for the Cure. It marks the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the 20th annual run in Canada. The first run was held in Toronto.

It’s the 11th annual Run for the Cure in Red Deer.

It takes place at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School.

Conquer Your Craving for a Cause will be held on Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. at East Side Mario’s to try to raise $5,000 and promote the run. Tickets are $20 each.
