Poplar Ridge families in the County of Red Deer will have the option to send their children to schools in Sylvan Lake when the new Penhold school opens in two years.

Poplar Ridge families in the County of Red Deer will have the option to send their children to schools in Sylvan Lake when the new Penhold school opens in two years.

As well, students who travel into the City of Red Deer to attend River Glen School will have the choice to attend the schools in Penhold.

Chinook’s Edge School Division will open a new Grade 7 to Grade 12 school in Penhold in the 2014-2015 school year. The name of the school will be decided in the next year.

On Wednesday the Chinook’s Edge School Division redrew its boundary lines for a number of schools in the northern part of the district in anticipation of the new addition.

Ray Hoppins, associate superintendent of System Services, said these are the final boundaries for 2014 and will not be in effect until the new school opens in the 2014-2015 school year.

“The board is announcing the changes now because parents have requested and sent a strong consistent message that they would like to see what it looks like now so that they want to plan ahead,” said Hoppins.

River Glen School, a kindergarten to Grade 12 school, will close when the high school opens. The Red Deer Public School Division has eyed the building for its Gateway Christian Program. A map of the boundaries is available at www.chinooksedge.ab.ca.
