University of Alberta students Jen Yau and Nick Klose catch books toppling off a circular cardboard column during a demonstration on bridges and buildings at G.W. Smith Elementary School Monday. The pair showed Grade 1 students how circular columns could hold substantially more weight than either square or triangular versions. The demonstration was just one of many by U of A students as part of the university’s student-run DiscoverE engineering, science and technology outreach program.
