FORT SASKATCHEWAN — Shell Canada isn’t saying much about the release of gas by one of the units at its Scotford heavy oil upgrader northeast of Edmonton.

Shell (TSX:SHC) spokesman Randy Provencal says an alarm was sounded at about 8:45 am Thursday and about 1,200 employees headed for muster points for head counts.

Provencal says Shell isn’t sure yet what went wrong but no one was injured.

Workers did not return to the upgrader unit that had problems but all other employees were back at their jobs by noon.

He says production at the other units at the upgrader wasn’t affected.

The Scotford Upgrader uses hydrogen-addition technology to upgrade high viscosity oilsands crude.
