Second escape in less than a month from Edmonton psychiatric hospital

A man who was in secure custody at a psychiatric institution in Edmonton has escaped.

EDMONTON — A man who was in secure custody at a psychiatric institution in Edmonton has escaped.

Police say they are looking for a 32-year-old patient who got away from Alberta Hospital late Tuesday afternoon.

They don’t believe he poses a threat to the public, but the reason he’s being held in secure custody has not been released.

His escape comes after a 44-year-old woman walked away from the same hospital early this month and has still not been found.

Melissa Ekkelenkamp, who was admitted one week before she disappeared, was supposed to be under close supervision.

Ekkelenkamp’s escape came after a fatality inquiry wrapped up into the freezing death of Lorraine Adolph, who also was a patient of the hospital in 2008.
