CALGARY — An agency that investigates shootings by Alberta police says a man wounded by a Calgary officer in May was suicidal and wanted to be killed.

Clifton Purvis, head of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, says police received a call about a man being held at knifepoint in an apartment.

When four officers arrived, they found a man with a large knife in a hallway.

Purvis says the man ignored orders to put down the knife and was shot once as he approached officers.

He says the man co-operated with the investigation and received treatment for a mental illness.

No charges will be laid against the officers involved.
