Short stay: Alberta legislature to sit for 2 days before month-long break

EDMONTON — Hello, they must be going.

The fall sitting of the Alberta legislature begins Monday. And on Tuesday the politicians go for a month-long break.

Premier Alison Redford said in a news release Thursday that more time is needed to stitch together her legislative agenda and get her caucus up to speed.

The legislature will then resume sitting on Nov. 21.

On Monday, Redford will address the legislature on the growing economic crisis around the world and how Alberta will react to it. Opposition leaders will then have a chance to respond.

She’ll ask the house on Tuesday for the recess until late November.

Opposition politicians were quick to jump on the decision as another reversal by the premier.

“Premier Redford’s disrespect for democracy by announcing a two-day fall session is shameful,” said Wildrose party house leader Rob Anderson in a Twitter feed.

Redford has been on the job for less than three weeks since winning the Progressive Conservative leadership race.

She had originally cancelled the entire fall sitting but relented two weeks ago when caucus members told her they would be ready.

Opponents pounced on that reversal as a “flip flop” and suggested Redford doesn’t have a steady hand on the tiller.
