SLAVE LAKE — The town of Slave Lake in northern Alberta wants 350 modular homes up by the fall for residents who lost their houses in last month’s fire.
Mayor Karina (kah-REE’-nah) Pillay-Kinnee (pih-LAY’ KINN’-ee) says it’s important families have somewhere to live by the time school starts in September.
About one-third of Slave Lake was destroyed by a forest fire that was fuelled by high winds on the May long weekend.
The mayor says the community is looking for a developer who can provide, install and manage the interim rental housing.
Town council is working with the Alberta government, the Municipal District of Lesser Slave Lake, the Sawridge First Nation, insurance companies and the private sector.
The Salvation Army is also accepting applications for assistance and has offered spaces at a summer camp for kids affected by the fire.
