Slow start for Safe Ride at Scotties

The safe ride program at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is off to a slow start.

The safe ride program at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is off to a slow start.

Darcy Ouellet, the fund development officer for the Central Alberta’s Women’s Outreach Society, said this means curling fans are simply being responsible or finding another way home.

“It was a couple a night,” said Ouellet. “It wasn’t overly busy. My impression is people are being more responsible or planning ahead.”

Volunteers started Saturday evening offering rides home from the Heart Stop Lounge inside the Centrium. One volunteer drives the person’s vehicle while another volunteer follows in another vehicle to take the volunteer back to the Centrium.

Rides can be arranged in advance by calling 403-896-9576 or by stopping by the lounge.

The ride service is a minimum $15 donation and $1 a kilometre return mileage.

The service runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. until Saturday. All proceeds will go to the society.
