EDMONTON — Wildrose leader Danielle Smith is renewing her attack on Alberta Premier Alison Redford for taking a 30 per cent pay hike four years ago.
Smith says Redford needs to show leadership after recently cutting pay for her backbenchers by putting a freeze on committee money.
Smith says the pay hike is only the tip of the iceberg of lavish entitlements given to politicians under the Progressive Conservatives.
She promises to open the books on travel pay and other reimbursements, roll back politician salaries across the board and set pay at one easy-to-understand number.
Redford’s has admitted there is anger on the doorsteps from voters upset about six-figure transition allowances for retiring politicians and a legislature committee paid for years without meeting.
Redford, who makes making $200,000 a year, has refused to cut her salary, but says she’ll wait for the recommendations from a retired Supreme Court judge now studying members’ pay.
